take K.I.M with you… everywhere!
above: K.I.M in the suitcase, below: K.I.M with someones foot!
florence lucas also known as K.I.M. started her career as illustrator in 2004 by designing record covers of ‘flores monstrosi’, ‘kim kong’ and the compilation ‘miyage’, released on the tigersushi label. her work can be good, a bit derivative of milo manara, but in no way as sophisticated. here are two of our favorites. we hope to see more of these and less of those! by dd

Aquascutum by christopher sturman
nice visuals for the english trench-coat manufacturer and now fashion house aquascutum. the plan is to give you a sense of its manufacturing process and thus its quality, and to be honest they are rather well made but awhile ago i looked into them and I could not find a single design i would care to wear. nice pictures now its time to hire a good designer. by dd

at last i’m perfect
‘at last i’m perfect’, 2002. 1.2 carat yellow diamond made with carbon from the artist’s body
marc quinn’s sculpture, paintings and drawings often deal with the distanced relationship we have with our bodies, highlighting how the conflict between the ‘natural’ and ‘cultural’ has a grip on the contemporary psyche. in 1999, quinn began a series of marble sculptures of amputees as a way of re-reading the aspirations of greek and roman statuary and their depictions of an idealized whole. one such work depicted alison lapper, a woman who was born without arms, when she was heavily pregnant. quinn subsequently enlarged this work to make it a major piece of public art for the fourth plinth of trafalgar square. other key themes in his work include genetic modification and hybridism. garden (2000), for instance, is a walk-through installation of impossibly beautiful flowers that will never decay, or his ‘eternal spring’ sculptures, featuring flowers preserved in perfect bloom by being plunged into sub-zero silicone. quinn has also explored the potential artistic uses of DNA, making a portrait of a sitter by extracting strands of DNA and placing it in a test-tube. DNA garden (2001), contains the DNA of over 75 plant species as well as two humans: a re-enactment of the garden of eden on a cellular level. quinn’s diverse and poetic work meditates on our attempts to understand or overcome the transience of human life through scientific knowledge and artistic expression. by kl

nagra: Analog candy
the nagra IV-S portable audio/sound recorder
call me crazy but I always wanted to get one of these units for my home use for playback of music ever since the film industry went digital on me. where is cassavetes? the professional audio field recorders by nagra where simply too expensive in the day, but now… used ones can be fetched up for a measly $2,000.
these audio recorder/playback decks are simply amazing not only in how they sound but also in how they are made. originally designed by a polish inventor by the name of stefan kudelski and built in cheseaux-sur-lausanne, in switzerland, their built and finish are to die for. they remind me of my old minox spy camera that my father gave me except they are swiss made. silver. slick. and rugged. of course there is a cool little story to the name… the name nagra is actually based on the polish slang meaning “it’ll record”. well, it did more than that indeed.
the swiss manufacturer of course has recently come up with a whole line of consumer audio equipment but the marketing reeks badly and the desperate jump to audiophile markets is simply not in style with old nagra. i have a strong feeling either the company was sold or took over by people who are looking to make a fast swiss frank. by dd
