french shoe designer christian louboutin must be the gatekeeper of desire and principles. ‘‘when i design my summer collection, i must work in a hot place,’’ he says. ‘‘and i must be in a cold place when i design for winter.’’ he chose brazil for the summer; and for th fall winter collection his estate in the french countryside has no heat and is therefore ideal for wintertime. light wait globe-trotter, louboutin always packs light: ‘‘i only do carry-on.’’ but what about fanatics who can’t bear to part with their louboutins when they travel? ‘‘my advice to them would be to ship the pairs before. that way, they can bring as many as they’d like.’’ is that fed ex or by private carrier? by dd

lara stone by “director” karl lagerfeld
poorly acted love encounters in a most unusual place, the fitting rooms at chanel. this wins the prize for the most naive and blatant abuses of love in the shameless service of commerce… director. it’s just one more thing that the great designer karl lagerfeld isn’t. lara stone however is always a welcome sight. by dd

the british PROac responce speakers: best sounding two way speakers for aspiring audiophiles
not much for looks, but these will be my next set of speaker purchases. the proac D28’s sport a pair of 6.5″ coated polypropylene cone drivers on die cast chassis and a pair of 1″ silk tweeter dome. i wont go into the black hole of audio adjectives (you can read them here) but the speakers are known for their uncolored (un-abusive base and highs) as well as proac designer, stewart tyler’s simple cross over design. they are honest sounding speakers that will not abuse or distort the recording and are a joy for long listening periods. if your music is predominantly electronic these are perhaps not for you, but then again no speaker can be accurately judged with such genre of music. at about $6,000 a pair (used ones can be fetched at audiogon for approx 3-4k) you can not expect anything more than a two way speaker, and the proacs are as good as they get in that category. the smaller mass bookshelves are bound to lack some of the base of the D28s but again you can’t cheat the laws of physics. the floor standing D28s have been on my list of replacement with my morels for some time now and i fully recommend them. if you’re in the market these are worth a listen. technical specs: 8 ohms nominal impedance, recommended amp of 10-200 watts, frequency 20hz o 30khz, sensitivity at 88db. weight 120lbs a pair. by dd
adidas: 1970’s arthur ashe – match play
the adidas ‘match play’ embodies key elements of the original legendary arthur ashe’s signature model. matchplay was inspired by a tennis shoe found in adidas scheinfield archive, the matchplay carries many court shoe features such as a derby cut, pimple outsole.
below: arthur ashe
arthur ashe was not only the first black man to win wimbledon, he was the name on my first pair of tennis shoe that i owned when i was 8 or so. from what little i can remember they were quite basic and simple, like stan smiths but with a slightly off whitish leather, red tabs and yellow text, which was what made them different than the stan smith clan. playing on damp clay courts in the hot summers of 78 made the soft white leather slightly reddish in color. this was a nice added touch for those avid clay fans not to mention projecting a rather self important image at age 8… seeing the stan smith post i searched for these vintage babies with no luck. best i could come up with was this. the adidas “match play”s. no mention of ashe on the shoe yet they come up under the search… some background: arthur ashe was the winner of US open 68, australian open 70, french open 71, wimbledon 75, australian open 77. by tm

as cool as it gets, the business cards case from monocle X ettinger… well almost, the other alternative is to go to smithson but it’s not the same price… the monocle is £60 which is more like $100. by ‘pp
Damien Hirst: skateboard decks for supreme new york
xmas is upon us and i was looking for two boards for two of my favorite girls in the world, now this may not be a girls dream but i think its pretty close as far as boards get. hirst and supreme have a long standing relationship and these are bound to be limited in their edition at supreme. try, if you can to get one… they are being collected, one of each by avid fans (fans of hirst more than supreme i would guess), saw a friend with 2 and he said its the only two he “didn’t” have. good luck. a set is already available on ebay for $1,849.99. by dd
marmot: stockholm down jacket
just the name brings me back memories of marvin…. but aside from that a good thing to have if you happen to be in the sierra, alps or new york city and want to keep warm. i just happen to be in one of em and enjoying the new purchase. so far so good. the puff jacket is not much for looks but the tear resistant down-proof fabric and durable vislon zippers is a serious contender in durability and the cold. from this utilitarian brand, known for its down fills, comes this 650 fill goose down (the higher the fill the warmer but also the less puffier – just learned that). the jacket also sports the added zip-off hood with super soft micro fleece internal cuffs. the only bummers are perhaps the zippers that are a bit too loud for my fussy fashion polar bear in my igloo. available for $225 at marmot online store. by zz
