jean charles de castelbajac – angels

i always had a certain kind of admiration for designer jean charles de castelbajac. not that i am especially fond of the clothes he did, but the man himself is definitely a great one. while in paris for few days, i’m always surprised and amused to see one of the angels he draws on wall using chalk. i heard he did it for years and it’s usually around the most beautiful places, like a blink. by pp’

quelques portraits de dandys – eugene marsan

eugene marsan’s book “quelques portraits de dandys” is a little gem published by “l’editeur singulier”. it’s just a few pages about dandy’s such as maurice barrès, jules barbey d’aurevilly, charles baudelaire, honoré de balzac, stendhal and so on. the author focus on details such as press pants or the details of a cane to relate those french dandys. anyway, everything is cool in this book, from the cover to the pictures, here 9 portraits of charles baudelaire. love it! by pp’

Rolling Stones Revisit: 1972’s Exile on Main Street documentary

mick jagger looking at a bob dylan LP

just saw the documentary by french filmmaker stephen kijak.  shot in the south of france during the stones exile tour, accommodated by their private jet and all, due to “unbearable” british taxes, hah! was a great watch and included some amazing-intimate-still-images of a band, too big to call, rock and roll. will try and post some more images later. recommended. by dd

momofuku: finally tried this gem of a joint

momofuku noodle bar

ok before you bitch pp, i know this isn’t a new joint. but i finally got to try the famous dishes at momofuku, a ‘kindda” korean based, casual restaurant in new york’s east village. the food was simply amazing and nothing you could have anywhere else. if you happen to like that you’ll be going back as i will.

we arrived around 9pm to a packed 40 minute wait, medium sized restaurant. the crowd remained and so did the wait on this thursday night until we left around 10:30-11. the place is quite simply done and super clean. almost too clean – tending to lean a bit on the prefab/suburban. the ikea bleach wood was taken to the n’th degree. i sort of missed a bit of that grit in such a special place. that said, in all of this suburban-ism, i appreciated the clean bathroom. nicely sealed on all 4 edges from any of those summer visitors that are bound to be somewhere near by, with a small stainless sink and a hand blower that actually worked. little details that went a long way.

a serious helena christensen and some handsome, young, happy actor

now, onwards to the food (and we had plenty of it): i started by sharing an orion beer with my dashing companion. tried the soy marinated egg (6/10) then a chicken mole tamale (10/10) moved on to sliced raw sea scallop with yuzu kosjo, sauteed cilantro-yum!, and beets (10/10) and then some pork buns made like tacos with two thick slices of pork rolled into the flat bun (8/10). for main-course, i had the chilled spicy (and they mean spicy) noodles with sichuan sausage, spinich, and suger cashews and my date the ginger scallion noodles, the only vegetarian dish on the menu! a bottle of sparkling water was required to wash it all down. our total bill something under a $100. not bad. the place is highly recommended.

as an extra; for those who may care… lovely model helena christensen and some handsome young actor josh hartnett, were sitting next to us at the bar. they had practically the same dishes as us, spicy noodles, the scallop, and the sorts… so josh if you are reading this, just wanna say that i know you where copying my order ; ) by dd

Oil Slick in the Gulf of Mexico: U.S. prohibited from enforcing the ban on the oil company

click to enlarge or go to earth observatory

you gotta love the sellout losers like martin feldman, i really wonder how much money is needed to make you become one of these disgusting, unethical, moral-less idiots. makes me sick: “a new orleans federal judge, martin feldman, “immediately prohibited” the U.S. from enforcing the ban on the oil company and lifted the six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling imposed by president obama following the largest oil spill in U.S. history. drilling services share prices went up upon the release of the news. by xy

anonymous gem – beaubourg

i shot this piece of beauty in beaubourg at the “dreamland” exhibition (sorry for the bad crop). the rest of the show is pretty lame but this is a real gem. it’s from 1930 and anonymous, i would bet that was an inspiration for some of the most iconic shots from solve sundsbo. love it! by dns + pp

chanel nº 5 – the birth of a myth

“…with the help of her lover, the grand duke dmitri pavlovich of russia, the rising couturier coco chanel met french perfumer ernest beaux in the late summer of 1920 and arranged a meeting in cannes where he presented his current and former works. intended as a christmas present for he best clients chanel chose the bottle no. 5 from the adaptation trials on “rallet n°1”. when beaux asked her how she wanted to name that scent, she replied: “i always launch my collection on the 5th day of the 5th months, so the number 5 seems to bring me luck – therefore, i will name it nº 5″initially only 100 flacons of “chanel nº 5” were produced, which she gave away on christmas 1921 for free to her best clients. however, soon the demand for further supply was such that she decided to launch the perfume officially for sale in her shops in 1922.

the iconic shape of chanel nº 5 is said to be inspired by vodka flasks from russian soldiers surrounding her lover. by pp’

roy lichtenstein – still life at gagosian

generally not a huge fan, or maybe a bored fan of roy lichtenstein, it was rather refreshing to see the still life exhibition at gagosian. some of them have a modern yet minimal touch of color that is not that usual in lichtenstein work (photo). some are a bit boring too but worth checking anyway. by pp’
