Olde New York
an early morning(-ish) discussion on the history of NYC lead to this discovery of a nice view of older NY. by jr+dd
built ford tough
dear tom ford: i get it, you’re launching cosmetics, so it’s all of a sudden all about color. but i can’t help but miss the contrast of the more modern stern seductress. i wanted to be that woman, i don’t think i want to be this one. also, even though she’s tougher, this campaign features almost the exact coloring as your old baby gucci‘s f/w campaign, but that’s probably just an unfortunate accident… or did mert and marcus get their briefs confused? you’re beyond the trend forecasting manuals, i have faith. by kl

even more jun ropé – this time by serge lutens
i couldn’t resist. although not as tight as avedon’s contributions below, they’re nice to see…so here are two spots by french photographer, filmmaker, hair stylist, perfumer, and fashion designer, serge lutens. by kl
can’t help but L.O.V.E. maurizio cattelan
‘officially it’s name is L.O.V. E. – so it stands for love – but everyone can read between the lines and take away the message they see for themselves.‘ says prankster art-star maurizio cattelan.
his most recent work resides in milan’s piazza affari, in front of the italian stock exchange building. made of marble, about 4 meters high and on a 7 meter base brings the sculpture to a total height of 11 meters. it was originally titled ‘omnia munda mundis’, literally meaning ‘to the pure [men], all things [are] pure’, a latin sentence that has entered a relatively common usage in many countries – but sometimes simplicity speaks louder. by kl
more jun ropé treasures – avedon, shrimpton & huston
the fashion world was really coming into its own after the warhol separation from just being a clothes industry. models were mysterious personalities, and fashion imagery was becoming iconic and aspirational, not the pre-50’s document of a product. here are a couple more clips for jun ropé, this time starring anjelica huston and then jean shrimpton. by kl
avedon & hutton for jun ropé
gotta love the fashion myth. i guess this is an ad starring lauren hutton and richard avedon for some extinct japanese fashion brand called ‘jun ropé’, not sure exactly where it ran. but i love the stereotypes, the saxophone, and the avedon. by kl
quote of the day
“It is an error to divide people into the living and the dead: there are people who
are dead-alive, and people who are alive-alive.
The dead-alive also write, walk, speak, act. But they make no mistakes;
only machines make no mistakes, and they produce only dead things.
The alive-alive are constantly in error, in search, in questions, in torment.”

A.S.S. presents Open Sesame
i went to this opening last night, it’s small but refreshing for our steamy new york summer evenings, even though the cops busted it up for innocent hipsters drinking out of paper bags on the sidewalk (comeon boys, aren’t you supposed to be fighting crime?). anyways i feel like it’s been a while since some art crew summer fun but maybe i’ve just been MIA. you should check it out, it’s currated by tim barber of tiny vices, showing works by some of the staples, oh and it’s at terrence koh‘s Asian Song Society gallery space. by kl
