what is in a name? beauty, terror, raw force of survival. these images, by tomasz gudzowaty, of a wildebeest (aka gnu antelopes) herd over a million strong on the plateau surrounding the ngorongoro volcanic crater in the serengeti during the december to june rainy period, inspire and haunt. after the last rainstorm, the plain rapidly changes into a dry and hostile wasteland, the wildebeests migrate, following the escaping rain and at a certain point during the migration, the herd must swim across its largest obstacle – the mara river. an epic journey. by kl

savile row: les maitres tailleurs du sur-mesure britannique

call my tailor: steve mcqueen
talk about handsome men and fine tailors. no doubt mcqueen visited savile row at the time for his personal pleasure (when there was no abercrombie & fitch anywhere in sight). douglas hayward of course supplied the suits for the thomas crown affair but that relationship didn’t just stop there. there is a great book on savile row, with a forward by tom ford (of course) which i will try and find to post. makes for good reading for anyone interested in dropping 10-20K on a suit. by dd

Libuse Niklova – toy designer
after ww2, wood is too expensive and rare to keep doing toys out of it. tchek designer Libuse Niklova then came up with a new vision for the toys she was designing for the company Gumotex Breclav. her toys got new shapes, new colors and an instant success. i personally like the simple yet not simplistic shapes of those pieces of design that don’t feel dated after almost 50 years. jeff koons, man, you’re out! by pp.
