who’s afraid of a mosquito?
in my bug-a-phobic finding to convince myself of the freak i am, i read about the deadliest of all creatures to man. not shark, nor taranchulas, nor bears but a little mosquito. the anopheles mosquitoes kill more than a million people each year. not a freak after all. i’m more phobic than ever now. guess i wont need a range rover series 1 after all. by dd
male hercules beetle: tropical rain forests of peru
trying to conquer my phobia with bugs, today i purchased a dried out specimen of this giant beetle enclosed in a glass frame. the hercules beetle, which was features in pixars “a bugs life”, is found in the rain forest and is the largest specimen of the rhinoceros beetle family. although harmless to humans (does not bite or sting) it can fly and crash land on you!!! and the males can reach an impressive 6.75 inches in length, making them rather threatening to a city dweller. they are aptly named hercules (the bulky son of zeus), due to their strength allowing them to lift 850 times their own body weight. this makes them, proportionately, the most powerful animal in the world. if man could lift 850 times his weight, one could lift 136,000 lbs, that’s roughly 68 tons! the horns are generally used in battling other males, picking them up and smashing them to the ground often breaking off the head. they eat rotten trees and fruit, and live as adults for no more than 3-4 months. beautiful illustration by somefield and below the real mccoy. by dd

prada: this fall’s creatures
Prada AW11 Campaign Film from F.TAPE on Vimeo.
ok, so i first saw this fall’s little fashion film for prada with the introduction about how sexy it was, i was not impressed with much more than the coloring. but i must say, i love a different approach to sexiness; slow movement, extreme delicacy, and being in your own world. worth the 1:19 of your life. by kl

from land-rover to road-rover to range-rover: the series 1 range rover
range rover “road-rover” was the original range rover prototype 1967
the 1st range rover “road-rover” full size clay model that resembles the production series 1 model
wednesday 17th june 1970 range rover was announced to the worlds motoring press
the original range rover was designed to be an upscale land rover purposed for estate drives. in its original inception it was a two wheel drive to shuttle the land-owners and royalty about the estate premises before it became 4 wheel drive terrain vehicle. unfortunately, and as with most cars today, i hate the modern versions of the range rover as it lost all its character and simple utilitarian lines. but what i miss the most about the range rover series 1 is that in the original design the side windows where quite large allowing you to rest your arm out the window sitting high on the platform seats with out raiding your shoulder, and allowing a open cockpit with 360 view of the terrain. the newer models partly due to US safety restrictions, have shortened the windows and raised the door panels lowering the driver. in subsequent models then they went about adding all sorts of “performance” cues/gadgets like fake aggressive air intakes ports and nonsense aerodynamic lines on a car that is simply not intended for speed but rather stability and might. RIP series one range rover the best 4×4 perhaps next to the monteverdi safari. by dd
