Back To The Future: Irina Werning Viejos

quite amazing. irina werning states: “i love old photos. i admit being a nosy photographer. as soon as i step into someone elses house, i start sniffing for them. most of us are fascinated by their retro look but to me, it’s imagining how people would feel and look like if they were to reenact them today… a few months ago, i decided to actually do this. so, with my camera, i started inviting people to go back to their future…” by cm

happy thanks giving: food for thought

they’re probably thinking, “i hope you choke on that turkey”

found this while reading about this silly holiday “…this may surprise those people who wonder what native americans think of this official U.S. celebration of the survival of early arrivals in a european invasion that culminated in the death of 10 to 30 million native american people. thanksgiving to me has never been about pilgrims. when i was six, my mother, a woman of the dineh nation, told my sister and me not to sing “land of the pilgrim’s pride” in “america the beautiful.” our people, she said, had been here much longer and taken much better care of the land. we were to sing “land of the indian’s pride” instead. i was proud to sing the new lyrics in school, but i sang softly. it was enough for me to know the difference. at six, i felt i had learned something very important. as a child of a native american family, you are part of a very select group of survivors, and i learned that my family possessed some “inside” knowledge of what really happened when those poor, tired masses came to our homes. when the pilgrims came to plymouth rock, they were poor and hungry — half of them died within a few months from disease and hunger. When Squanto, a wampanoag man, found them, they were in a pitiful state. he spoke english, having traveled to europe, and took pity on them. their english crops had failed. the native people fed them through the winter and taught them how to grow their food. these were not merely “friendly indians.” they had already experienced european slave traders raiding their villages for a hundred years or so, and they were wary — but it was their way to give freely to those who had nothing.” thanksgiving a native american viewby xy

what the F#@K is a coa track?

remember when suddenly everything started to have its name spelled out on it? like a cup with the word “cup” on it? “soap dish”. “pillow”. endless shit. what the hell was that about? like you’re not gonna know what a fucking cup is? hating aside (and you should see this hater if you haven’t) this is the coolest coat rack i’ve seen after this one, i just still don’t know what to do with it. by dd

black beauty: 1972 citroen SM with maserati engine

the french manufacturer citroen purchased italy’s maserati in 1968 hoping to incorporate the legendary maserati’s gran turismo V6 engine with its legendary citroen suspension. the result was the flagship citroen SM, a hopeful follow-up to the sought after DS and a contender to the jaguar and the aston of the time. the french car provided a combination of comfort, sharp handling, and high performance not available in any other car at the time not to mention the the shortest stopping distance of any car tested until then. now who would have expected that of the french? however with all its accolades the SM flopped, possibly due to to the fact that it was french, and possibly due to its less than elegant tail. the french have always been shy about bragging (although they usually have the goods to back it), something the americans, italians and the brits thrive upon. unfortunately now the italians are bankrupt, with thanks to berlusconi and the french have sarkozy working on bankrupting them. citroen on the other hand will remain as proof of french genius. by dd

robert mapplethorpe x sofia coppola

paris gallery owner thaddeus ropac who is in charge of the estate of photographer robert mappelthorpe is having different people with an art background curating an exhibition of mappelthrope pictures every other year. after hedi slimane and robert wilson, here is sofia coppola to pick her favorite image from the archives of the photographer. it’s always very interesting to see the choices someone with a particular eye makes. hedi slimane picked images that looked like his own photos and miss coppola’s selections look like her movies of course. sofia coppola’s are less obvious and less known. by pp.

Puis doucement s’écroule… by ars
