architect maya lin’s installation for phillip lim’s fashion week show – NYFW 2015

we actually love the gestural installation for philip lim’s show and well gladly take that over any old runway/catwalk… but before we all run out and comment “that’s awesome” on instagram, it would be good to understand a bit of the history and where it came from. thanks to the internet, we create very little new content, its the curse of our generation, and we, ourselves, are guilty of that many folds. its simply too easy to just regurgitate what has been there. and the info is so readily available in cliff notes version. but the least we can do is to study the things that attract us just a bit, and understand what came before us. if nothing, when we want to copy some one, and we always evidently do, we can go to the source and the origin of it, and maybe learn a bit about its history first… now that’s not an ‘outdated way of doing things’ doll… that’s just  “super awesome!!by xy

over a thousand hot wheels all in one place

i know this is a bit old news by now, when i saw it i was going to do a post but that never happened. still it must be in the archives of TS… can the future of L.A. be this? or maybe the future of the world? most likely it will… and per chris burden, well all be driving in autonomous cars going on average at a speed of 230 miles per hour. the city structures are very cool especially the reflective mirror like high rise and the charles eames reference house of cards. i think anyone with a current or past love for slot cars, hotwheels, or matchbox cars would love this… by uh

crayola art series by our cali friend

Esai-Ramirez-crayola-Yves-Klein

our west coat designer friend, esai ramirez, had this lovely idea for crayola which made us quite excited, so we asked for his permission to post these. we’d buy a dozen of these today if crayola would have produced them. so listen up crayola!! we suggest you all email crayola and convince them to get their marketing hats on and get ready to sell these at colette, moma stores and anywhere artster-youngsters hang.

The Memories Come Back in Waves

john-severson-surf-book-and-photography

“john severson’s surf” is a book that presents the languid-meets-extreme-thrills lifestyle of surfing through paintings and vivid photography. while his were among the first surf movies, it was the posters associated with them, hugely popular when issued in the 1950s and 1960s, that remain collector favorites today. showcased in these early posters, his graphic skills translated easily to surfer magazine which he founded in 1960. the magazine was the first to celebrate and revolutionize the art and sport of surfing, establishing it as a powerful pop culture phenomenon.

severson expanded his career to include photography, with photographs appearing in life, sports illustrated, paris match and other print venues. the first issue was a 36-page collection of black-and-white photos, cartoon sketches and short articles—almost every aspect of which was created by severson himself. as the magazine grew in popularity, so did his graphic work and paintings. by lb

we find a lot of inspiration in tokujin yoshioka’s projects, and one of his latest finalized piece is quite phenomenal. yoshioka have made a reinterpretation of a japanese tea house made entirely of glass, residing next to a buddhist temple in kyoto. by kt

mixed media: anila quayyum agha

intersections, laser-cut wood, single light bulb, 6.5′ square cube, completed: december 2013, cast shadows: 32’x34′.

anila quayyum agha works in a cross disciplinary fashion with mixed media; creating artwork that explores global politics, cultural multiplicity, mass media, and social and gender roles in our current cultural and global scenario. as a result her artwork is conceptually challenging, producing complicated weaves of thought, artistic action and social experience.

in the ‘intersections’ project, the geometrical patterning in islamic sacred spaces, associated with certitude is explored in a way that reveals it fluidity. the viewer is invited to confront the contradictory nature of all intersections, while simultaneously exploring boundaries. my goal is to explore the binaries of public and private, light and shadow, and static and dynamic by relying on the purity and inner symmetry of geometric design, and the interpretation of the cast shadows. the form of the design and its layered, multidimensional variations will depend both on the space in which it is installed, the arrangement of the installation, and the various paths that individuals take while experiencing the space.

the intersections project takes the seminal experience of exclusion as a woman from a space of community and creativity such as a mosque and translates the complex expressions of both wonder and exclusion that have been my experience while growing up in pakistan. the wooden frieze emulates a pattern from the alhambra, which was poised at the intersection of history, culture and art and was a place where islamic and western discourses, met and co-existed in harmony and served as a testament to the symbiosis of difference. for me the familiarity of the space visited at the alhambra palace and the memories of another time and place from my past, coalesced in creating this project. my intent with this installation was to give substance to mutualism, exploring the binaries of public and private, light and shadow, and static and dynamic. this installation project relies on the purity and inner symmetry of geometric design, the interpretation of the cast shadows and the viewer’s presence within a public space. (source: hereby kgb
