ed ruscha in nyc

ed ruscha honey i twisted through more damn traffic today mural

originally conceptualized for los angeles in 1977, this titular quip from the one and only ed ruscha is coming soon to new york. it will be on w. 22nd street & 10th avenue, right near the highline. this is ruscha’s first public nyc project; a silent soundtrack with playfully distracting vernacular. i don’t drive, but i’ll certainly be strolling by to take a look with my fellow pedestrians. by sv

dr seuss painting pink tuted small beast

theodore geisel (the one and only dr. seuss) was a man of oh so many talents. aside from his background in advertising that helped compartmentalize platforms for the greatest children’s literature ever penned, ted was a phenomenal painter and illustrator. he did not consider himself such, only working on this hobby after midnight. you can see more of his hobby here, and read lovely blurbs by another children’s literature genius, maurice sendak. this painting, known as the ‘pink tufted small beast in a night landscape’ was done by seuss in 1960. it exemplifies traces we’ve seen in the lorax, not to mention escher’s relativity. by sv

austrian artist, klemens torggler, reinvents the door

i was expecting this to come from a japanese artist not an austrian one, but ill take 2. torggler calls this his flip panel door, or “dryehplattentür”, also referred to as the evolution door. its made of paper stretched to structural beams. he has a few variations on this door, one with the origami-esque triangles that fold out to help the door move, and another system with rods that rotate two square panels. the door is currently a prototype but will come in glass wood and steel versions. by ht
