the design process
a great promotional film from the 60’s by walter landor and associates showing the design process from start to finish. unfortunately or luckily (..?) the process has slightly changed today due to 3d- software and 3d- printers. by kt
I don’t want anything else but the new Jaguar low drag GT
more aerodynamically efficient than a ferrari 250GTO
malcolm sayer was a genius… just memorize that
interior with original toggle switches…. no gold, no fancy wood, nor excess leather with dollar bill signs…. drool!
in a world of shit cars, here is a brand new car with airbag, ABS breaking, AC and all the stupid necessary things we all want and need, but cant find in a vintage car, packaged in a beautifully proportioned body of a legend. this car is individually built for each client to his or her specs so the sky is the limit.
a little background on the low drag GT: the jaguar low drag GT is based on the prototype made from the original e-type by jaguar back in the 60’s. efforts to create an optimized racing e-type, with reduced weight and a further enhanced aerodynamic profile for the factory-resulted in the low drag version as the company began to plan the 1962 racing season. in conjunction with the development of the low drag, jaguar were also putting focus into the all-aluminum ‘lightweight’’ e-type, with uprated engines, suspension and brakes. 12 of these all-aluminum were developed, and they soon became the focus of the racing development at jaguar. this left the beautiful low drag prototype in the shade, and although development continued as an ‘after hours’ project, much more focus went into the eventual 12 lightweight jags. malcolm sayer who tested the low drag in a wind tunnel in those after hours, discovered that the shape was more aerodynamically efficient than a ferrari 250GTO (10%) and the standard e-type (20%) but the low drag was left behind as the lightweight jags took the ascendant position and redyed for the 1962 race. it took several decades for the low drag to reemerge from the archives but now you can have a custom one made just for you! now what a treat that would be? the cost, pending your requirements of course, would start around £650,000 i wont mention what that is in dollars. by uh

Nameless paints
ima moteki, a design duo in japan, has just created a set of nameless paints that aim to completely change the way children learn and think about color. instead of using color names, each white tube of paint is labelled with an “equation” showing which primary colors, and in what proportions, were used to make the color inside.
the designers, yusuke imai and ayami moteki, believe that color labels are problematic. “by not assigning names to the colors we want to expand the definition of what a color can be, and the various shades they can create by mixing them,” said imai.
in addition to rejecting labels, the paints also teach color theory. the equations on the paint tubes help children understand some of the basic concepts behind color theory and how to mix and create new colors. by lb
design geek alert: 1975 NASA Graphics Standards Manual reissue
what a cool pet project by by jesse reed and hamish smyth… to reprint the original 1975 NASA graphics standards manual through kickstarter. for just $79 you can be one the very few to own and sport a soft-touch, hard-cover, copy of the reissued NASA graphics bible. a must have for any self respecting graphic designer. go ahead. pull out your credit card and reserve yours, there is only 26 more days left, and only so many copies. these are sure to be collector book items. you can most definitely sell your extra copy on ebay for much more than the price offered here given the limited edition issues. so do it as an investment, do it for design, do it for NASA, do it so we can get our copy. here’s the link to the kick started page, may your design go where no man has gone before. by ars
sit on this: maximo riera hippo chair is one motherfrying furniture icon
created in the same style as the rest of his chairs from the “animal chair collection”, the aptly named maximo riera‘s “hippopotamus chair” was created in thick, black, leather with a limited run of just 20 editions. you can sit on one for a hefty $95,000, but just imagine, no matter how fat your future guest will be, they will feel at home and will forever appreciate your love of blubber (PS blubber is indeed found in hippos which makes these chunky animals surprisingly buoyant). by ar

1910 kubus chair by austrian architect joseph hoffmann
austrian architect joseph hoffmann
early prototypes of hoffmann’s kubus armchair
simplicity of the grid – and repetition
source of inspiration for the now famous le corbusier LC2 and LC3 cube chairs
kubus in soft white leather
where did this come from? evolution of the less linear hoffmann clubchair
chairs we like… kubus is a perfect example of hoffmann’s strict geometrical lines and the quadratic theme in this iconic and historic armchair. designed back in 1910, it was presented at the international exhibition held in buenos aires on the centennial of argentinean independence known as the may revolution. his work was of great influence to modernist architects and this specific chair was reportedly the initial source of inspiration for the now famous le corbusier LC2 and LC3 chairs created back in 1928 for villa church that appeared at the salon d’automne in 1929. corbusier literally took the kubus chair and turned it inside out, bringing the structure of the armchair hidden under the surface material and placing it on the outer edge. hoffmann’s constant use of squares and cubes earned him the nickname quadratl hoffmann or “square hoffmann”. But he was not always bound by linera lines as evident in his club chair above. the hoffmann kubus chairs range from $4K to $2.5k ( pamono wittman edition ) and knock offs for even less. corrections are always welcomed in the comments section. by uh
