the late sixties and early seventies were a golden era for menswear, according to simon spurr who launched spurr only two years ago. inspired by helmut newton, yves saint laurent, alain delon, bowie and hendrix for spurr’s perfectly finished, immaculately fitted tailoring. a casual, weightless luxury… the ideal ensemble for the contemporary libertine aesthete. by kl

stiletto: Behati Prinsloo photographed by karen collins
one of my favorite recent shoots by photographer karen collins for french publication stiletto. its almost too good for stiletto if you ask me. the beautiful light and a tangible femininity which was present in her earlier work seems to be seeping its way back into the this period. very happy to see that. model behati prinsloo, stylist wayne gross… the september issue. by xy

NY fashion week: waris at the bar in the jane hotel
actually that was a very fun shindig indeed. DS was pleasantly surprised after this feed, the pay-bar was a bit odd, must admit, but in hindsight that’s cool and rather in-order given the state of the economy and an exclusive start-up like house of waris. that said we had a blast and the crowd was, as expected, good. the place was comfortably packed without the insanity associated to the past marc parties where you literally can not walk let alone dance. leaving at 1am there was still a heard of people at the door slithering to get in. if anyone was to criticize anything it was the music. the best music yet was at the roof-top for the visionaire + women management party. still waiting to get the track lists on that. by dd
iconoclastic: yoko ono and three as four at milk tonight
threeASFOUR + Yoko Ono
the design trio threeASfour has collaborated with yoko ono on their spring 2010 collection, which they’ll show during new york fashion week, on september 17 at milk studios. ono’s dot-drawings have been turned into limited-edition prints on cotton and silk and i just can’t wait to see the result. the event will also include a preview of yoko ono’s new album, “between my head and the sky”. by kv
more black and blue than purple: Olivier Zahm
there is something about french cheese i learned when i lived in paris… just cause it stinks it doesn’t mean it’s good. as much as olivier aspires to be like serge, zahm is more in line with the late belmondo and aged delon than anywhere near gainsbourg. but one can always keep trying. as terry advised me once, “rock out with your cock out”. now just for the record, we have nothing against purple the magazine, we do like it, we have the very first issues when it was in a smaller format and not plastered with nudies. in terms of publication we even like the more recent ones, but some things have to be said about a man in a position of power who uses it shamelessly… which by the way brings to mind, that short italian prime minister, is that berlusconi? by dd
how to iron your own shirt: japanese style from garra
i have always ironed my own shirts. i find it to be better than yoga, its meditative and very rewarding. i like to think no place irons my shirts as well as i do. its an art and there’s always more to learn. here’s a video on garra, with a super stripped-down streamlined iron and flat japan style iron table. go to http://www.garra.jp click on “ironing skills” on the left hand list at the bottom. unfortunately the rest of the site is not so great. enjoy! by dd
POP magazine under dasha zhukova
tomorrow is finally the launch-day of the long anticipated first issue of POP under new editor-in-chief dasha zhukova (ex c-model and ex-other half of gazillionaire roman abramovich). filling in katie grands shoes will not be an easy job.dasha zhukova is young and beautiful and has already started a fashion line, opened an art gallery, been appointed editor of pop, and gotten hooked up with a russian oligarch. no wonder people hate her.
a glowing new profile in interview magazine reminds us that there is going to be a lot of loving-her-or-hating-her going around when the first issue of pop with her as editor hits the stands. is she a fierce art and fashion visionary who is a role model for little russian girls? or, is she a horrible money-grubbing slattern who is using her rich boyfriend to finance her hobbies and ride on the coat tails of katie grand?
pop mag itself was originally co-founded in 2000 by ashley heath and editor godess katie grand. pop went trough a lot of drama when in 2008, katie decided to leave, bring with her the creative team to start LOVE magazine instead. well, tomorrow both magazines will be out so let the shelf-battle begin! by kv
Mark Borthwick for Pop
hipsters, youngsters and rip-offs
I was surprised that the infamous “september issue” documentary on anna wintour and co was directed by r.j cutler (?) as it seems to be exactly the same concept than the two great documentary that loic prigent did on chanel (lagerfeld) and marc jacobs. It feels to me a little bit as a rip-off. but not as well done as the originals. so for the ones that are interested in this kind of documentaries, i would really suggest the prigent’s ones. here and here. as far as the rip-off, what felt the most surprising to me after watching it is the fact that the vogue us, which is supposed to be a leading publication in the fashion industry (promoting youthful, beauty and taste) is directed by a bunch of old crunchy british ladies that all seem frustrated like hell. and a bunch of “none the less old & ridiculous” guys with the courage of kittens… nice perspectives here. by pp’
