the black belles – worshipping paul
i’m not sure why, but i think these girls are obsessed with paul from gretchen. except girls, all black and furry hats… a little fineness is appreciated. this is the first single by the black belles, it’s called what can i do? and directed by jack white… you know where he’s from, right? by kl
roma “citta aperta” x christian from phoenix
was checking the Phoenix diary the other day and i saw this old post by christian. he was basically saying he went to one of those small theater in paris for a screening of rosselini’s roma, citta aperta, and was alone in the room, so i guess he had fun… well i think the images are really nice. worth sharing. by pp’
the ghost who walk – the model who talk
one would says that a model singing in not very new and surely not very promising exept we’re talking about karen elson who is madame jack white and that was really not deceiving on stage with her burlesque band few years ago. so let’s hope for the best, i already love the artwork around the cd “the ghost who walk” released date is supposedly on the 25th but they seems to play the thrill on us. will check for sure. by pp’
why don’t you love me – beyoncé
this is the only beyoncé video i’m allowed to post on tomorrow started. love the makeup, love the hair, love the moves, love matching fingernails to turquoise rotary phone. i much prefer this girl to the one attempting to win in the try-hard edgy fashion competition. sometimes you have to allow yourself some mass pop indulgence, especially when they’re using some of your favorite references. by kl
iggy pop – preliminaires
iggy pop record “preliminaires” was released last year, i totally missed it then but finally dabbled this weekend. it’s a really nice one and rather interesting since it’s based on texts from french infamous writer michel houellebecq. plus there are some songs in french including a cover from jacques prevert’s “les feuilles mortes”. nonetheless, how interesting is the cover designed by persian/french illustrator marjane satrapi, author of the incredible “persepolis”? all good! cool trailer here. by pp’
i don’t know why
i don’t know why, but every spring i have a joni mitchell moment. i think it’s because it’s a time to remember that the bleak winter eventually ends, and the world won’t always be exhausting and brutal—it can be soft and sweet, and fun and romantic. by kl
Lovin’ Spoonful’s Summer in the City
they sound a whole lot cooler than they look, and i can’t wait for summer. by kl
jarvis cocker: waxes ideology
i don’t know, but i somehow loved this guy. in a funny way i feel like i always knew who he was. even before knowing him. in my opinion camille had this amazing being, and she really fucked it up. if i was a girl jarvis would be my dream. by ay
shane macgowan: ‘i put a spell on you’ for haiti
even though the front page news has shifted, haiti still remains a mess. macgowan and johnny depp took their sweet time assembling and releasing this alternative-star jam that includes: the great shane macgowan, johnny depp, nick cave, the clash’s mick jones, chrissie hynde, glen matlock, paloma faith, and others. to quote amrit at stereogum,
“their cover of screamin’ jay hawkins’ i put a spell on you benefits the dublin based concern worldwide, who have been in haiti for 16 years. depp is mostly charged with looking cool and fingering a guitar solo (that isn’t at all the guitar solo on the recording, but who cares he’s so pretty), the rest lay down vocals on a song that doesn’t so obviously address the state and need of the haitian people through self-aggrandized posturing (“everybody hurts”; “we are the world”, and so on) and is all the more effective for it. seems to be more like, let’s get together, realize our place in this thing, smoke a cigarette, remind ourselves that we can still do a little something to help without being patronizing assholes about it.”
well put. we couldn’t have said it better. track available march 7th. by cdc
for all you poofters
what’s up? there’s just too much gentrification going on over here. by xy
mark ronson featuring amy winehouse
and for the record here he is… judge for yourself, but i think this video would have been more apt if paul weller was actually playing the gretsch, and mark ronson was one of the people in the audience coming up on stage. by dd
