jamaican record producer clive chin
amsterdams dj jaziah
our friends at “here we go now” have compiled a series of music compilations from various DJs in NY and beyond, including the legendary jamaican record producer clive chin of new yorks miss lilly’s. if you happen to have the patience to wait for the damn stream to load (pending your connection: mine took 2 minutes and 19″ seconds to be exact) this eclectic mix of reggae funk and electronica by the ceft coalition spanning over an hour of music is worth a listen (click here to load stream). my other fav is of course anything from clive as well as the mix by princess christiens socceaneanana. happy listening. photos courtesy of gerald forster. by pr

hanging by a thread: incredible “drawings”
on view at the kunstgaleriebonn gallery in bonn from june 6th to july 20, 2012
detail: the lines are actually thread glued down one at a time
“the thread has been adhered to the paper. the second layer… is adhered to the paper… at the intersections.”
incredible detail “drawing” by hadi tabatabi. that is if you can call them drawings, granted they are included in the sally & waynn kramarsky epic works-on-paper collection next to richard tuttle, robert smithson, jasper johns, eva hesse, donald judd, richard serra, john cage, and on and on. this new series is constructed with thread, a common material used by the artist in past work, but never in this manner… “in this new work there are two layers of thread. one layer sits directly on the paper, and the whole length of the thread has been adhered to the paper. the second layer which is perpendicular to the first layer sits on top of the first layer and is adhered to the paper only at the ends and to the first layer thread at the intersections.” this kind of patience and detail is something of an anomaly in our time, and that is exactly why i love this work. of course, nothing is like seeing these up-close. i bought a piece last year in new york from the danese gallery. if you are in germany in june/july check out the show “papier/paper III” at the kunstgaleriebonn, in bonn june 6th to july 20, and at the denese again in new york, june 14 through august 17. by wk
tom sachs space program mars: nasa meets nike, meets krink ink, meets tupac, meets playboy. it was one hell of a party
may 15th opening night at the tom sachs show at the new york park avenue armory
i’ve had eggs and bacon with buzz aldrin himself (no shit!) and i still found this to be pretty exciting
gravity defying counterfeit nike high-tops courtesy of mister tom sachs, i so wanted this one
authentic nasa fridge… the final frontier
i suppose you cant take your samsung point-and-shoot to the moon now can ya!
nasa taco truck, brilliant.
i’m not sure so don’t quote me, but i think this is john fuckin luries stinkin’ air jordans
thanx dre we missed you that night but you where there in spirit… and well as a ban-saw!
this was funny, vintage 60’s-70’s playboy issues painted in official nasa silver. upon exit of the show you walk through a metal detector while 3 mustache-laden nasa officials are busy reading playboys with the nasa silver cover
mars yard shoe, cause you won’t need high tops all the way up there. i was actually wondering that night what nike had to do with nasa and all? and the funny thing i learned was that nike has been and does actually supply nasa with many of the astronauts high tech fabrics and get-ups…
jerry-rigged nasa suit by tom sachs
nasa krink-ink, i mean you’re not gonna go all the way there and not tag shit.
maybe i can explain kl… so last week we somehow got on the premier nights invite list by mistake, sorta like peter sellers in blake edwards’ film “the party.” it was a hike to the peak of manhattan, but it was tom sachs, and i was curious what sort of shenanigans he’d be up to in new york now that jeffrey‘s has flocked to la. i remember mid-way climbing up mount everest in the cab that i thought damn this better be worth it… but you know i grew up admiring nasa, wanted to be an astronaut, had every book on nasa and it’s space suits, and i even named my dog after the first dog in space… so why not? once there i stepped over the slimy olivier zahn, said hi to robert longo, pushed aside kanye west, hugged mario sorrenti, kissed bill cunningham’s forehead and grabbed some popcorn. the show was great and i had a big smile walking around. but while tom’s work is more trendy than serious and he has a bit of a frat boy humor for my taste, he does make me laugh and the show in a way made my grey week a bit more nasa red. i highly recommend all you art lovers to check it out. the show, at the park avenue armory is up till june 17th so hurry. by dd
avedon at gagosian
lately, the gagosian galleries presented back to back shows that very few museum could put up. the new avedon exhibition is one of them, the huge prints of the warhol factory and the ginsberg crew are fantastic. some prints are more expected but always nice to see. makes you realize how the guy was ahead… and still is. a must see. by pp.
Supreme store nyc: and the lines go on…
not all fans look like fans
ok we all loved supreme, and that red box with its bold type is pretty cool. but like all punk rock bands that start out cool and soon find a bunch of losers pretend moshing at their feet, supreme has also come full circle. maybe its all those lady gaga ads that did them in? i never really got that! i mean, what does supreme have in common with gaga or her fans? i pass by the store often when in town, and i see the lines round the block like its “born this way” at ticketmaster and think to myself “who are these people?” they are nothing like what you’d think to see from supreme’s projected image, but rather a bunch of nerdy, zit faced, trust-fund masterbaters who line up the street mid-week, from morning to night, for a piece of that red tape. you can’t blame supreme for that, but it just makes things worse when you see the “store clerk” step out like henry rollins, fluff up and try and drop some attitude upon these god-forsaken souls. i mean yeah, that must feel really grand to boss around a bunch of teenage nerds who are dying to buy your logo clad t-shirts… i would at least drop the facade and fess up to selling out, and when you do, this is who you get at your doorstep, so don’t act all evil. by pr
Last Thursday: Adrian Brody, Greenwich Hotel Shibui Spa, Robert Deniro, Owen Wilson, Win Wenders, Pina Bausch, Woody Allen, and salvador dali
every thursday should be like last thursday. after a full on month back from the holidays, i finally took a day off to rejuvenate. i slept till 11 am (i usually do, but still), picked up my date, and went for a coffee at la colombe. then, we walked to the greenwich hotel, which is partly owned by robert deniro. the lobby is not impressive and the neither is the hotel really; but, if you want a private, quiet and out-of-the way place in the heart of NYC then this is probably it. downstairs at the hotel is the greenwich hotel spa and indoor pool. we had a hinoki bath for 2 containing a blend of hinoki cypress, cedar, mint, sage, and minerals, in a full on japanese “imported” room with low ceilings and tatami mat. we were catered to by a true japanese masseuse with little english ability (refreshing). while in our hinoki soaked bath, we were handed amazing drinks containing mint, ginger, and lemon which were so amazing i wanted to take them home (approx $95). after turning in to mush, i headed to my massage. a “drunken lotus” ritual as they call it (approx $200-280). by the end i was floating and could barely feel my legs. regardless, i dragged myself to BAM in brooklyn, one of the last places in NY to be showing “pina” the 3d film by win wenders on pina bausch. i was unsold on the 3d, and found it to be sensationalist and a total waste of material; but, after seeing it i was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked. regardless, i still think its quite unnecessary generally speaking. on the other hand, the film was out of this world. the sequences filmed on everyday streets and outdoor spaces were truly magical, as you never see dance in such a setting (films preview). a beautiful homage and a must see film ideally in a theater. so what’s next? japanese food of course, to keep the SPA experience alive. i had a fabulous grilled salmon with skin, and plenty of sake. i finished the early night with woody allen’s “midnight in paris”. another great film i had missed. this one was unfortunately off screen but it was the best woody allen film since he stopped being in his films. i loved it. owen wilson is a natural woody embodiment without cheap imitation. sometimes, when i see a good film, i wish i could erase my memory and watch all my favorite films again. thursday was the closest i could get to that. we had some wine and finished the day early in bed and i slept like a log. it was a day i would recommend to just about any friend or foe. by uh
not everybody was kung fu fighting
the last place I would expect to find a place like this would be a tiny street in the heart of chinatown. why? because it’s mexican to begin with. since there is no sign saying pulqueria at the door, you have to ask the bouncers of apotheke next door: where the hell is pulqueria? and then they point to the vietnamese restaurant sign that you’ve passed by 10 times within the last 5 minutes. but its all worth it once you go downstairs to see an exciting list of cocktails and micheladas (beer with lime, canlentina spices, chili-salt rim!). oh and it gets better- the kitchen is open till 12, so if you got too excited with the drinks, you can have something delicious to eat. the name comes from the native beverage of central mexico, “pulque” a milk colored drink that’s made from fermented sap of the maguey plant. they offer you a shot of it when you sit at the bar. pulqueria is on 11 doyers street near bowery. by ak
the world according to fabrice penot: le labo in the bazaar
was quietly editing today along with my santal 33 candle from le labo, when i came across the issue of harper’s bazaar russia. i’m amazed as to how russian language has changed since i used to speak it as a child. forget high german, i can barely understand it. that said, mr. penot’s life is a life of envy. who wouldn’t want to be around the fabulous smells and good vibes of le labo on a daily basis? they have become a little piece of nolita’s modern history by now and we can’t get enough of them… by xy
